SD-05-01 Brookings Brookings     Gone GONE Round frame barn located in section 12. Known as the Kruse Farm barn. It has recently been reported that this barn has been gone for many years. The owner's mailbox is in the shape of a round barn.
SD-05-02   White     ?   Round barn. From a postcard that shows a full form round barn with cupolo, titled "H. A. Lillibridge Farm Scene", White, SD. There's a windmill next to it. It was postally used at White on May 13, 1914. - Jocelyn Howells - 10-23-02.

True round barn, faded red vertical siding, 2-pitch roof, central silo with cap.
SD-06-03   Warner     06-2004 N45 14.64 W98 40.40 SW of Warner, New Hope Township. US281 S. 5.8 miles from jct with Warner Rd. just W. of Warner, W. on 148th St. (CR27) 7.7 miles bldg on the N. side of the road. Octagon shed, faded red vertical siding.
SD-06-04   Warner     06-2004 N45 15.17 W98 39.91 SW of Warner, New Hope Township. US281 S. 5.8 miles from jct with Warner Rd. just W. of Warner, W. on 148th St. (CR27) 7.0 miles, N. on 377th Av. (CR2) 0.6 miles to the bldg on the W. side of the road up a driveway 0.2 miles. Octagon shed, faded red horizontal siding.
SD-09-01 Butte Nisland   1916 1994   Leave US212 at Nisland, go to SW edge of town, and drive about 1 mile. SW on gravel road to Butte-Lawrence county fairgrounds (visible from edge of town). Near E. side of fairgrounds is large white frame octagon pavilion. It is well maintained. Interior shows careful workmanship by builders.
SD-12-01 Clark Clark     06-2004 N44 52.64 W97 44.18 In Clark. At the SE corner of US212 (1st Av.) & Dakota St. True round barn, former sales barn, now converted to the Playhouse Restaurant. There have been so many additions and changes to the structure that the large roof is now the chief feature that identifies it as true round barn.
SD-14-01 Coddington Watertown     06-2002 N44 51.70 W97 06.57 S. of Watertown. US81 S. 2.0 miles from jct with US212 in Watertown to the barn on the W. side of the road. Emminger, true round, cement block painted white, 2-pitch roof, octagon louvered cupola, "De Laval Dakota Dairy" painted on N. and S. sides, a few holes in the roof, fair condition.
SD-14-02   Watertown     06-2002 N44 53.30 W97 03.73 In Watertown. US212 W. 0.3 miles from jct with I29 (exit 177) in Watertown, S. on 33rd St. SE 0.1 miles to the building on the E. side of the road at the Mallard Pointe Industrial Park. Octagon building, brick, small square cupola w/octagon roof, 2 story & 2nd story is "all windows", segmented cone roof, excellent condition.
SD-18-01 Day Webster     1994   From Clark/Day county line go N. 2 miles on SR25; then turn E. (R.) and go 3 miles on CR36 (blacktop); then turn S. (R.) and go 0.6- miles on CR13 (gravel). Harry Svien farm is on W. side. Barn is octagonal with faded red horizontal siding white trim, and a small cupola. Silo with owner's name on it stands apart from barn. There is also a small hexagonal shed on the property.
SD-19-01 Deuel Clear Lake   1923 06-2002 N44 41.61 W96 27.15 SE of Clear Lake. SD22 E. (curves S.) 12.8 miles from jct with SD15 in Clear Lake, continue S. on 487th Av. 1.2 miles, E. on 185th St. 0.4 miles, S. on 488th Av. (which forms state line) 0.7 miles to the barn on the W. side of the road back in a barn lot about 200'. Completely hidden from the road by trees. See owner on 185th St. (0.6 miles N. & W.) for permission to visit. Jim Cleveland. The main part is a 12-sided one-story hog sales pavilion with matching windowed cupola and fair sized dormer on the E. over the main entrance. It has a long rectangular addition on the W. side. The whole structure was painted red with white trim. The paint is now almost completely faded out. Most of the numerous windows are broken. It is no longer in use and in poor condition. There was a small polygonal building, in poor condition, S. of hog pavilion and W. of rectangular barn and this building in now gone.
SD-20-01 Dewey Parade     1997   There is reported to be an oval hog barn owned by Frank Lorenz at 1.5 miles N. of the jct. of US212 and SR63. This building has not been investigated. It is difficult to photograph because of obstructions and "NO TRESPASSING" signs. Sits back quite a ways from the road.
SD-24-01 Faulk Zell     06-2004 N44 53.87 W98 43.59 In Zell, Zell Township. US212 E. 0.1 miles from jct with Paul St. in Zell, N. on 1st St. 0.2 miles to farm at end of road. 12-sided barn, white horizontal siding, large hay dormer on E. side, low cupola w/aerator, fair condition. There is also a small polygonal building (chicken house?) E. of the barn.
SD-24-02   Zell     06-2004 N44 53.86 W98 43.57 In Zell, Zell Township. US212 E. 0.1 miles from jct with Paul St. in Zell, N. on 1st St. 0.2 miles to farm at end of road. Next to SD-24-01. 12-sided barn, probably chicken house, no cupola, aerator, poor condition.
SD-25-01 Grant Goodwin   1914 06-2002 N45 00.11 W96 52.10 N. of Goodwin. CR289 N. 6.0 miles from jct with US212 just N. of Goodwin, W. on 166th St. 0.5 miles, N. on 467th Av. (CR11) 1.6 miles to the barn on the W. side of the road up a driveway 0.4 miles. Lloyd Evjen, octagon, white metal vertical siding, cupola w/dormer on the E., no longer in use, good condition. It is said to have been purchased from a mail-order house. Barn is readily visible from CR11; it stands on a slope.
SD-25-02   LaBolt     ?   NE of LaBolt. 2 miles N. and 6 miles E. of La Bolt, Wilford Anderson Farm. Round. [Not found & no one to ask. - 6-21-02 - DJT]
SD-25-03   Big Stone City     06-2001   W. of Big Stone City , Big Stone Township. US12 SW 2.5 miles from jct with SD109 in Big Stone City, N. on 145th (484th ) St. 0.8 miles, W. on 484th (CR4) Av. 0.25 miles, N. on 146th (484th) St. 0.3 miles to the barn on the W. side of the road. Harold Rabe, true round barn, faded red horizontal siding, conical roof, large cupola, hay dormer on the N., fair condition, stands N. of other buildings. Stave silo is surrounded by manger; rest of interior is divided into pins. Still used for cattle. NOTE: Big Stone power plant, visible for miles, looms up off to the NE. [RWM]
SD-26-01 Gregory Gregory   ca 1920 1994   At 212 E. 2nd St. in Gregory there is an octagonal sales barn used by the Gregory Livestock Auction. White with red trim, with a large matching cupola, the building has many lean-tos and wings attached to it and is surrounded on three sides by holding pens. Still in use.
SD-27-01 Haakon Philip     1994   From SR73 in Philip turn W. on W. Pine St. and go 0.6 miles to football field/fairgrounds on N. side of St., on the edge of town. Most conspicuous building is one-story 15-sided white 4-H pavilion with vertical siding. It is used seasonally and is maintained in good condition.
SD-29-01 Hand Miller     05-2004 N44 30.89 W98 59.03 In Miller. E 1st St. E. 0.25 miles (3 blocks) from jct with SD45 (Broadway Av.) in Miller, S. on 3rd Av. SE 300' to the barn on the W. side of the road. True round sales barn, red vertical siding, large windowed cupola, good condition, surrounded on N., W., and S. sides by holding pens, making photography difficult except from E. side.
SD-29-02   Orient 60' 1911 05-2004 N44 51.88 W99 00.21 SE of Orient, Park Township. CR1 E. 3.3 miles from jct with Autumn St. in Orient, continue E. on US212 1.6 miles, S. on SD45 2.1 miles, W. on 174th St. 0.8 miles to the barn on the S. side of the road up a driveway 0.1 miles. Octagon barn, 2 story, red horizontal siding, central wooden silo, large dormer, large cupola w/o windows or vents w/aerator. On the former Mike Morris farm, now owned by Scot and JoEllen Wieseler. It is used for storage and is in good condition. Said to have been built in 1911, though a picture taken before the present owners acquired it shows the date of 1918, the year the Morris family moved to the farm. Built by FA Anderson. Next to SD-29-03.
SD-29-03   Orient   1911 05-2004 N44 51.86 W99 00.26 Next to SD-29-02. Octagon barn, 1 story, red horizontal siding, large cupola. Used for hogs and is in fair to good condition. Said to have been built in 1911.
SD-32-01 Hughes Blunt     05-2004 N44 30.77 W99 59.12 In Blunt. US14 E. 0.3 miles from jct with Canford St. in Blunt to the barn on the S. side of the road. Octagon livestock sales barn, white horizontal siding, large cupola. Partly obscured by sunflower field by midsummer.
SD-33-01 Hutchinson Freeman     06-2002 N43 21.10 W97 25.30 In Freeman. 4th St. W. 0.05 miles from jct with US81 in Freeman to the house on the S. side of the road. Round house, possibly concrete walls & roof, appears to have skylight inplace of cupola, excellent condition.
SD-35-01 Jackson Stamford   1919 06-2001 approximate N43 52.97 W101 08.50 W. of Stamford. Hwy 16 W. 2.8 miles from jct with CR CH1 at Stamford, N. on SD63 about 0.3 miles to the barn on the W. side of the road at the "1880 town". Just N. of I90 at exit 170. 14-sided barn, red horizontal siding, 2-pitch segmented roof, louvered cupola, good condition. Built near Draper, it was brought to this new site, 45 miles away, by Clarence Hullinger, who operates "1880 Town". It now serves as the main entrance and headquarters; it has been modified in various ways.
SD-37-01 Jones Draper   1918 1994   From exit 201 of I90, go N. 1.4 miles to Draper. From Cenex gas station go E. 0.7 miles on gravel road; then turn N. (L.) and go 1.8 miles on another gravel road; then turn E. (R.) and go 2.2 miles on another gravel road. Barn is on N. (L.) side of road. It lost its original roof in a tornado. True round, it has red vertical metal siding; there is no cupola. Present owner uses it for sheep and has recently made extensive repairs.
SD-39-01 Lake Madison     Gone GONE Barn is on E. side of road, 0.5 miles N. of National Guard Armory, in Madison. Hollow tile with conical roof, gothic arch wing on the S. side. Silo inside but does not extend through roof. Building is run-down but may be still used. (Razed 2000 - 7-4-01 - JT)
SD-39-02   Madison     06-2002 N43 57.86 W97 18.35 WSW of Madison. US81 W. 6.1 miles from jct with SD34 on the W. edge of Madison, S. on 448th Av. (CR47) 3.0 miles, W. on 236th St. (CR42) 2.9 miles to the barn on the N. side of the road. Brian Hodne, true round, tile, 2-pitch roof, central silo protrudes through the roof, hay dormer on S., unused, roof poor condition, sides good condition.
SD-41-01 Lincoln Canton   1917 06-2002 N43 20.82 W96 44.44 NW of Canton. US18 W. 6.7 miles from jct with SD44 in Canton, N. on SD44 2.0 miles, continue W. on SD44 1.0 miles, N. on 473rd 1.2 miles to the barn on the E. side of the road up a driveway 0.3 miles. Easily viewed from the S. from 279th. True round, dark tile, central silo protrudes through the roof, fair condition. Not used and the roof is deteriorating.
SD-43-01 McCook Salem     06-2002 N43 48.24 W97 27.71 NW of Salem. US81 N. 5.0 miles from jct with 252nd on the N. side of Salem, W. on 247th 3.6 miles (just past Unityville) to the barn on the S. side of the road standing alone in a field. True round, tile, dome roof, central silo protrudes through the roof. Roof has a large hole on the E. & numerous smaller holes; walls still in good condition.
SD-43-02   Montrose     06-2002 N43 46.11 W97 10.17 N. of Montrose. 1st St. N. 0.6 miles from jct with SD38 in Montrose, E. on 254th St. 0.25 miles, N. on Valley Rd. 3.8 miles, E. (curves N.) on 250th St. 1.3 miles, continue N. on 452nd Av. 0.55 miles to the barn on the W. side of the road. True round, tile, 2-pitch roof, central silo protrudes through the roof, very good condition.
SD-46-01 Meade Sturgis     06-2001 approximate N44 22.19 W103 28.43 SE of Sturgis. I90 SE from Sturgis about 3.5 miles to exit 34, W. on Old Stone Rd. 150', SE on Pleasant Valley Dr. about 0.7 miles to the entrance to Black Hills National Cemetery. Go past farmstead on R.; turn R. on gravel road and go to entrance to field road on R. Log barn, can be seen about 200 yards to the N. (also visible from I90). True round, vertical log siding, large louvered cupola topped by a ventilator, very good condition. Used for horses.
SD-49-01 Minnehaha Sioux Falls   1920 06-2002 N43 32.51 W96 38.97 E. of Sioux Falls. SD42 E. 2.2 miles from jct with I229 (exit 6), S. on S Powder House Rd. 0.15 miles to the barn on the E. side of the road at 600 S. Powder House Rd. Shafer, tile, 2-pitch roof, central silo extends through the roof, many small holes in roof, fair condition. Barn cannot be seen from Powder House Rd. Picture taken from the N. from SD42.
SD-49-02   Sioux Falls   1917 06-2002 N43 39.07 W96 42.94 N. of Sioux Falls. SD115 N. 3.2 miles from jct with I90 (exit 399) at the NE corner of Sioux Falls, W. on Northview 0.15 miles to the barn. Christensen, cement block walls, built as a dairy barn, it is now used for horses, ventilator w/weather vane, shingled 2-pitch roof, very good condition.
SD-50-01 Moody Flandreau     06-2002 N44 02.59 W96 35.45 In Flandreau. SD13 S. 0.35 miles (4 blocks) from jct with SD32 in Flandreau, W. on Broad Av. 0.15 miles to the barn on the S. side of the road. Octagon barn, faded red horizontal siding, large louvered & windowed cupola, cone roof, fair condition. Building is leaning to W.
SD-50-02   Trent     06-2002 N43 54.39 W96 41.34 W. of Trent. CR14 (240th St.) W. 1.75 miles from jct with 1st St. in Trent to the barn on the N. side of the road at the "Little Village Farm". True round, red horizontal siding w/white trim, aerator, cone roof, excellent condition. (Moved from the banks of Big Souix River.)
SD-50-03   Trent   2001 06-2002 N43 54.42 W96 41.32 W. of Trent. CR14 (240th St.) W. 1.7 miles from jct with 1st St. in Trent, N. on 476th Av. 0.05 miles to the barn on the W. side of the road at the "Little Village Farm". 16-sided barn, white metal vertical siding, aerator, green segmented cone roof, excellent condition.
SD-50-04   Trent     06-2002 N43 54.41 W96 41.35 W. of Trent. CR14 (240th St.) W. 1.75 miles from jct with 1st St. in Trent barn on the N. side of the road at the "Little Village Farm". Round building, red vertical siding, weather vane, cone roof, excellent condigion.
SD-50-05   Trent     06-2002 N43 54.41 W96 41.35 W. of Trent. CR14 (240th St.) W. 1.75 miles from jct with 1st St. in Trent barn on the N. side of the road at the "Little Village Farm". Hexagon building, red vertical siding, aerator, sectional cone roof, excellent condition.
SD-50-06   Flandreau     06-2002 N44 00.44 W96 32.27 SE of Flandreau. SD13 S. 2.8 miles from jct with SD32 in Flandreau, E. on SD34 2.5 miles to the house on the S. side of the road. Geodesic dome.
SD-51-01 Pennington Rapid City     06-2001 approximate N43 58.30 W103 18.65 SW of Rapid City. US16 S. (curves W.) 10.0 miles from jct of SD79 (St. Joseph) Rapid City to the barn on the S. side of the road at the road leading to Sitting Bull Crystal Cave. Octagon barn, white vertical siding with 2 sets of doors in each side, segmented conical roof, small louvered cupola, good condition. Operated as a tourist attraction. Does not appear to be in use.
SD-51-02   Rapid City     06-2001 approximate N44 04.55 W103 12.05 In Rapid City. SD44 (Omaha St.) W. 0.5 miles from jct with US16 bypass, S. on La Crosse St. about 0.3 miles to the Pennington County fairgrounds, on the E. side of the road. Octagon barn, "Horticulture Hall", white horizontal siding, roof consists of 8 curved segments, giving dome effect, "steeple", excellent condition. Reported to have been known at one time as Alfalfa Palace.
SD-53-01 Potter Gettysburg 96'   05-2004 N45 12.14 W99 59.71 N. of Gettysburg, Central Potter Township. US212 W. 5.1 miles from jct with Main St. in Gettysburg, N. on US83 13.0 miles, E. on 151st St. (gravel) 3.0 miles to the barn on the N. side of the road. True round barn, 2-pitch conical roof, wing extending around barn, gambrel-roofed entrance on S. side, unused and deteriorating.
SD-53-02   Gettysburg     05-2004 N45 01.11 W99 56.45 I the Potter County fairgrounds E. of Gettysburg, Central Potter Township. US212 E. (curves NE) 1.0 miles from jct with Main St. in Gettysburg, N. on 311th Av. (CR155, Nebraska St.) 300', W. into the fairgrounds 250' to the barn. Octagon barn, white horizontal siding, livestock sales barn, large cupola. The central building is octagonal, with two rectangular wings that somewhat conceal the original design.
SD-53-03   Seneca   1903/7 1994   From US212, 5 miles W. of Seneca and 2 miles W. of Faulk/Potter county line, turn N. on gravel county road (sign points to "Tolstoy 10 miles") and go 6 miles Then turn W. (L.) on gravel road and go 2.5 miles to long farm driveway on N. (R.) side. Take this driveway 0.4 miles to John Penrod farm. On E. side of complex of farm buildings (including unoccupied house and occupied trailer) there is a one-story oblong brick hog barn. No longer in use, it is in poor to fair condition. Early picture shows it with oval cupola, now gone, and several small windows, now boarded up, in roof. May have been built in 1903 or 1907.
SD-62-01 Turner Freeman     ?   SE of Freeman. 5 miles E. and 5.5 miles S. of Freeman. Round. An ag extension agent gives the location as: Section 35, Township 98N, Range 55W. [Barn not verified - reliability of information unknown] [Not found & the farmer I asked didn't know about it. - 6-20-02 - DJT]
SD-63-01 Union Alcester     06-2002 N42 59.78 W96 47.14 S. of Beresford. 471st St. S. 6.1 miles from jct with 298th on the SW corner of Beresford to the barn on the E. side of the road just S. of 303rd. Twelve-sided, white horizontal siding, no cupola, outside chimney on S. side, fair condition, looks as if it had been used as house. May have had cupola.
SD-65-01 Yankton Yankton     06-2002 N42 53.20 W97 16.47 E. of Yankton. SD50 E. 6.3 miles from jct with US81 in Yankton, N. on 446th 0.5 miles to the barn on the E. side of the road at 31047 446th Av. Small octagon frame barn, white horizontal siding, tall louvered coupla, cone roof, good condition. (House and other buildings are on W. side of the road.)
SD-65-02   Yankton 35' 1913 08-2004 N42 56.04 W97 19.35 NE of Yankton, Mission Hill Township. SD50 E. 6.3 miles from jct with US81 in Yankton, N. on 446th 2.0 miles, W. on CR366 (309th St.) 2.2 miles, N. on CR369 (444th Av.) 1.7 miles to the shed on the W. side of the road up a driveway 0.2 miles at 30725 444th Av. Curt Nelson, small octagon frame machine shed, white horizontal siding, louvered cupola, cone roof, very good condition. Original construction cost $1,325. Restored Jul 2004. NRHP.
