Hi. My name is Elliott Goble. My wife said you were by here today. South East of Paw Paw 3 miles. You wanted to know about the big barn of mine. My Grand father William Mott Goble had the barn made back in 1908. I don't know if you went in the barn or not but you should have and seen what kind of lumber there is. 3 x 12s full 34 feet long and 18 x 22 I think 30 or 35 feet long. You can not buy that lumber today. My Aunt Bertha Goble that lived on the farm at that time keep the records of who worked on the barn and how much they got. Some men got $2.25 a day with a team of horses. I have the sheets that she wrote it on yet. The roof has got 116 squares and 24 ½ kegs of nails, 8 ½ kegs of shingle nails, 126 feet of circle track. The track goes around the inside of the barn to put the corn in the crib. The crib holds 14,000 bushels of ear corn.
There is three floors in it. I put 34 tons of hay on the 2nd floor back in 1959. My grand father Mott farmed it until 1925 then my father James C. Goble farmed it then I started in 1958. Then I stopped in 1998 and have my Cousin Roger Larson farm it and I have to help. The barn is 60 feet high and it cost raw materiel $3,009.85 and the labor was $704.85. Total is $3,714.70. Lot of money back in that time. He fed cattle out of the corn crib. The barn was done on Sept 7, 1908. They had a big dance after they got it done. I just got done with the last three sections of the barn [shingling the roof djt] last fall. It cost me $3,150 a section but it is worth it. Now I need to do the sides next year I hope. When I had them start on the roof, I had them take the shingles all off down to the bare wood and then we put plywood down first then tar paper then the shingles. Well I can not think of anything else to tell you so have a nice night and stop by again when youre in Paw Paw. Elliott |
