This interesting barn is located on the Dave Dighton farm at 3342 120th Av., Northwest of Coggon. The barn was built by Dave’s grandfather, Robert Kirkpatrick, and another man who was a bricklayer. It was started in 1907 and completed in 1910. The bricks were brought from Chicago and the bricklayer worked 3 months for $190 plus room and board. The total cost was $1900. Much intricate handwork was put into the construction — like the roof boards being tapered so there would be no cracks. The barn is 40 feet tall and 60 feet in diameter with a silo in the middle. There is a feed bunk around the silo, while a haymow circles the upper floor. Silage in the silo never froze because of the hay’s insulation. There has been continuous upkeep on the barn, which is presently used as a horse barn.
